Manchester United have completed the signing of Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford for a fee of £65 million plus £6 million in add-ons, taking the total package to £71 million. The club immediately criticised Brentford for attempting to sell the Cameroon international to other Premier League clubs, including Newcastle, Tottenham, Arsenal and Chelsea, in order to scupper the deal.
Sources close to the negotiations claim Brentford pressured Mbeumo to lower his wage demands to increase their fee, but United honoured the player's desire to join by agreeing a £200,000-a-week contract. The add-ons are linked to team and individual performance targets. Brentford had initially wanted £70 million plus £7 million in add-ons, but United negotiated the final figure down.
Mbeumo, who scored 20 Premier League goals and provided eight assists last season, insisted on joining United despite interest from other clubs. He said: 'As soon as I knew there was a chance to join Manchester United, I had to take the opportunity to sign for the club of my dreams.' He has signed a contract until June 2030, with an option for a further year.
Director of Football Jason Wilcox praised Mbeumo's record and determination: 'Bryan's goals and assists record in the Premier League is exceptional... his belief in our project and determination to join the club confirmed that he was the perfect fit.' Mbeumo will join the squad for their pre-season tour of the United States and is expected to make his debut on Saturday against West Ham in New Jersey.
