Manchester United are reportedly monitoring James Garner's situation at Everton as they consider a surprise move to bring the academy product back to Old Trafford. The 23-year-old midfielder left United in 2022 for a fee of around £9m plus add-ons, but has impressed for David Moyes' side this season.
Garner is entering the final six months of his contract at Everton, who are in negotiations to extend his deal. However, United see him as a cost-effective option in January, especially as they plan a big-money move for Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson in the summer, with a fee expected to exceed £100m.
Garner's standout performance in Everton's victory over United at Old Trafford earlier this month caught the attention of England manager Thomas Tuchel. The report suggests United are keen to bring him back in early January, but any departure from Old Trafford would require a replacement first.
Manager Ruben Amorim has confirmed that no player will be allowed to leave unless a substitute is secured. 'It's going to be hard for someone to leave the club if we don't get a substitution. We are short,' Amorim said. Kobbie Mainoo and Joshua Zirkzee have been linked with loan moves, but Amorim insists the squad needs reinforcements before any exits.
