Manchester United Progress in Contract Talks with Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire
The Press Association has learned that Manchester United are advancing in discussions over new contracts for midfield talent Kobbie Mainoo and experienced defender Harry Maguire. Both players have become integral figures since Michael Carrick assumed managerial duties two months ago, with their consistent performances earning them a recent call-up to the England national team under manager Thomas Tuchel.
Kobbie Mainoo's Contract Situation
Mainoo's future at Old Trafford had previously appeared uncertain after he slipped down the pecking order under former manager Ruben Amorim. The 20-year-old midfielder even saw a request for a loan move rejected in August. However, his current deal, which expires in 2027 with an option for an additional year, is now the subject of progressing negotiations. According to reports from The Athletic, the academy graduate is set to sign fresh terms that would extend his stay until 2031, securing his long-term commitment to the club.
Harry Maguire's Proposed Extension
Meanwhile, Harry Maguire, whose contract is due to conclude at the end of this season, looks poised to extend his tenure at Manchester United beyond the summer. The 33-year-old centre-back, who joined from Leicester City in a high-profile £80 million transfer in 2019, has reportedly been offered a one-year contract with the possibility of a further season. This move underscores the club's confidence in his continued contributions to the squad.
Broader Squad Developments at Old Trafford
In related squad news, Manchester United have already confirmed that midfielder Casemiro will depart upon the expiration of his contract. Additionally, the Press Association understands that the club currently has no plans to renegotiate with Barcelona regarding a permanent transfer for Marcus Rashford. Rashford spent the latter half of last season on loan at Aston Villa and, after a summer period with United's so-called 'bomb squad', joined the LaLiga champions on a season-long loan for the 2025/26 campaign.
This loan agreement includes an option for Barcelona to make the move permanent for a fee reported to be 30 million euros (approximately £25.85 million). While Barcelona are said to be eager to secure Rashford permanently and hope to discuss terms, sources within Manchester United indicate no present intention to engage in such negotiations. Rashford has made 38 appearances across all competitions for the Spanish leaders this season, scoring 10 goals. His lucrative contract with his boyhood club, Manchester United, remains valid until 2028.
