Zinedine Zidane has been tipped for the Manchester United job, but the Frenchman has previously stated he would need to master English before considering the role. The legendary manager has been repeatedly linked with the Old Trafford position as pressure mounts on current boss Ruben Amorim following United's 3-1 defeat to Brentford.
Amorim has lost 17 of his 33 Premier League matches and is yet to achieve consecutive victories at the club. With fifth-placed Sunderland visiting on Saturday, former United defender Gary Neville believes the Portuguese manager could face the sack if the newly-promoted side claim all three points.
Though Amorim is understood to retain backing from the Old Trafford hierarchy, speculation continues over potential successors. Zidane, currently unemployed, has consistently been mentioned as a prime candidate, but he expressed doubts in 2022, telling L'Equipe: 'I understand English, but I'm not completely fluent in it. I know that there are coaches who go to clubs without speaking the language, but I work in a different way.'
Emmanuel Petit, a former teammate of Zidane, also cast doubt on a move, saying: 'Zizou needs to get guarantees if he wants to sign over there. The environment at Manchester United for years has not been good. The stability of the bench, the level of the players, the expectation of the club is not the same that it used to be.'
Zidane is heavily tipped to take over the France national team after the 2026 World Cup, further complicating any potential move to United.
