Manchester United suffered a humiliating 0-3 defeat to Bournemouth at Old Trafford, a result that effectively ends Michael Carrick's reign as manager. The atmosphere turned toxic as fans unfurled a banner reading “Standards” alongside pictures of Bryan Robson, Roy Keane and Eric Cantona, and later chanted abuse at the club's owners.
Carrick's Last Rites
At the final whistle, Carrick went to each corner of the ground as if saying goodbye. The defeat will go down as one of the worst and most damaging United have ever suffered at Old Trafford, with the manager looking lost on the touchline. Carrick's emotional five-minute and 25-second monologue and the decision to drop Bruno Fernandes failed to spark a reaction.
Carrick had called on the current generation to follow the example of Wayne Rooney and Sir Bobby Charlton by showing “sacrifice and hard work.” But United were described as meek, spineless and pathetic, showing no fight for the manager and no passion for the fans.
Fans Turn on Owners
The Stretford End chanted “Sell United, now f*** off home,” turning on the Glazers and Sir Jim Ratcliffe, before directing abuse at director of football Jason Wilcox. Old Trafford was half empty by the final whistle.
The defeat came as Bournemouth played United off the pitch. Ayden Heaven was booked for a two-footed challenge, and Justin Kluivert's free kick found Rayan unmarked to fire home at the back post after 38 minutes. The second goal came when Lenny Yoro slipped, allowing Adrien Truffert to cross for Marcus Tavernier to score. The third arrived after 71 minutes when Evanilson rounded keeper Senne Lammens and curled a shot into the top corner.
Fernandes Benched
Fernandes, dropped days after questioning Carrick's tactics, never came off the bench. United fans chanted Carrick's name before the final whistle and cheered him as he went round the ground, thumping his chest, while the players were booed down the tunnel. The fans have decided who is to blame, and it is not Carrick.
