Man United told to hire Emery as Carrick sack looms

Manchester United have been told to hire Unai Emery as their next manager, with Michael Carrick expected to be sacked. The pressure on Carrick intensified after Manchester United were beaten 3-0 by Bournemouth on Sunday, leaving the club 16th in the Premier League after their worst start to a season.

Emery's Recent Success

Just 24 hours before that defeat, Emery became the ninth-fastest manager to record 100 wins in the Premier League after ending Manchester City's perfect start to the season with a 2-1 victory at Villa Park on Saturday. He has also guided Aston Villa to their first major trophy since 1996 by winning last season's Europa League and has overseen a complete rebuild of his side this summer, losing multiple key names.

It is often reported that Emery has control over most things at Villa Park, a rarity in the modern Premier League reminiscent of Sir Alex Ferguson's reign at Manchester United.

Carragher's View

Jamie Carragher believes that the next person tasked with Manchester United's top job needs a similar authority, even if he does have some misgivings regarding Emery. The former England international explained: "He is a manager I look at when I think about Manchester United.

"People say behind the scenes at Aston Villa, he runs the whole club. Sir Alex Ferguson did that at Manchester United. It's not just the United way, it's the way in football generally.

"I think Emery is the best manager in the Premier League. But I've got this thing with him. Yes, his record in the Europa League is amazing, but surely somebody who is that successful wants to be known in the Champions League?

"He wants to win the Champions League. He's not going to do that at Aston Villa. He's had two experiences that haven't gone particularly well for him, Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal.

"And I just think surely he would want that opportunity to prove himself at an absolute giant of a football club. Sorry, Villa fans."
