Man United handed Scott McTominay return update after enquiry

Manchester United have reportedly made an enquiry about re-signing Scott McTominay from Napoli, with the midfielder open to a return to the Premier League. The Scotland international left Old Trafford in the summer of 2024 in a deal worth £25.9 million (€30.5 million) and has since established himself as a key player for the Serie A club.

Contract stand-off at Napoli

McTominay helped Napoli win the Serie A title in his first season in Naples, and the club finished second behind Inter Milan last term. Despite being settled and important to the Italian giants, an update suggests a departure could be possible in the future, with the midfielder currently in a contract stand-off that could reportedly see him leave as early as January if no agreement is reached.

Sky Sports report that United have already enquired about re-signing McTominay, as have Aston Villa and Real Madrid. His representatives remain in dialogue with several Premier League clubs, although it is unclear whether United are among them. Talks have reportedly taken place about a potential move in the near future, with the player said to be open to returning to the Premier League.

New deal talks and January exit reports

The update follows a report from Italian newspaper Il Mattino claiming McTominay has instructed his representatives to try to agree a new deal with Napoli after unsuccessful talks so far. If fresh terms cannot be agreed, it could lead to the former United star leaving Napoli in the January transfer window.

Real Madrid have been mentioned as a potential destination, and it remains to be seen whether United will pursue a deal for their former midfielder. United strengthened their midfield options in the summer with the permanent signings of Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba.
