Man United face Howe compensation payout to Newcastle

Manchester United would have to pay Newcastle United compensation if they appoint Eddie Howe as their next head coach, with the former Magpies boss understood to be on a two-man shortlist for the Old Trafford role.

Howe is being considered alongside ex-Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann, with the club reportedly open to the job if current interim Michael Carrick leaves. However, Chronicle Live understands that any move by the Red Devils to land Howe would trigger a significant payout to Newcastle, given the 47-year-old had a number of years remaining on his contract.

Howe's Contract Situation

Howe was earning around £6m a year at Newcastle and was serving a multi-year deal that was extended in summer 2024. The compensation due could run into millions, especially as United agreed to allow staff members such as Jason Tindall, Stephen Purches and Simon Weatherstone to leave with him, amid rumours of them returning to management with Howe.

Newcastle did not want Howe to leave when he informed the board of his decision back in July, but accepted his wish to quit after five years in charge. The club's statement at the time confirmed his departure and thanked him for his contribution.

Club Statements on Howe's Exit

Newcastle's August statement read: "Newcastle United can announce that Eddie Howe has informed the club of his decision to step down as head coach. The club has accepted Eddie's decision and would like to thank him for his extraordinary contribution. Also leaving the club are coaches Jason Tindall, Graeme Jones, Stephen Purches and Simon Weatherstone, and head of performance Dan Hodges."

At the time, Newcastle United CEO David Hopkinson said: "Eddie and his staff leave with the deep gratitude and respect of everyone at Newcastle United, and with a lasting place in the club's history. While we are naturally disappointed to see Eddie leave, we remain immensely thankful for everything he has done for the club."

Sporting director Ross Wilson added: "I would like to thank Eddie and his staff for everything they have done for Newcastle United. I'm grateful for the support, trust and partnership Eddie has shown throughout our time working together."

What Happens Next

Newcastle are believed to be monitoring what happens next with Howe and Manchester United, with fans poised to see if the club swoops for the former head coach in the coming days.
