Man United decide Martinez future after Wilcox outburst

Lisandro Martinez will leave Manchester United next summer, according to reports, following his public criticism of the club's director of football. The 28-year-old defender is not expected to sign a new contract before his current deal expires in September 2027, and United are expected to trigger a 12-month extension to extract a transfer fee rather than lose him for free.

Fallout from Atletico Madrid defeat

Martinez made headlines after United's 2-0 Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid, when he singled out director of football Jason Wilcox for criticism. In a post-match interview, he said: "I expect more from our technical director," blaming the club for not signing enough players last summer.

The Argentine was fined by the club and issued a public apology for the interview. He also held clear-the-air talks with Wilcox, chief executive Omar Barrada and manager Michael Carrick. According to the Daily Mail, it is unlikely the 2022 World Cup winner will extend his stay beyond his current terms.

Defensive overhaul planned

United are expected to reshape their defence in the same way they invested in their attacking line in 2025 and their midfield this year. Uncertainty also surrounds Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire, whose deals expire next summer. Maguire's contract includes an extension clause, while Shaw's does not.

United had been linked with Newcastle United defender Lewis Hall, but Newcastle rebuffed any approach, insisting the England international was not for sale. In central defence, Matthijs de Ligt remains at the club, though he has not played since November 30 last year due to a recurring back injury that required surgery.

Martinez injury and United future

Martinez started United's 1-1 draw away to Leeds United but was taken off at half-time with an injury. He has been at the club since the summer of 2022, when he arrived from Ajax in a deal worth £57m. His last two campaigns have been disrupted by a cruciate ligament injury and a calf problem, which saw him miss dozens of matches.

De Ligt has been in the squad for United's last two matches, and the club still regard him as a significant figure in the dressing room. Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven are seen as long-term options, though both are considered raw and inexperienced.
