Manchester United had a goal disallowed against Chelsea after a VAR review determined that Matheus Cunha was in an offside position. The Brazilian forward had tapped in Harry Maguire's headed knock-down, believing he had given Michael Carrick's side the lead.
Cunha celebrated by running to the corner and performing his trademark surfing celebration, with Carrick and his staff celebrating what seemed a vital goal. However, VAR was reviewing the goal in the background and quickly concluded it should be disallowed as Cunha's leg was offside when Maguire headed back to him.
VAR Overturns the Goal
After the goal was ruled out, TNT Sports pundits Ally McCoist and Joe Cole expressed despair for the under-pressure Carrick. The official Premier League Match Centre X page later uploaded a statement confirming the decision: "34’ VAR OVERTURN VAR checked the referee’s call of goal – and determined that Cunha was in an offside position and recommended that the goal was disallowed."
When the decision was confirmed, the camera panned to a disappointed Carrick. TNT commentator Darren Fletcher said: "Let me just tell you that's the last thing the poor fella sat on the bench needs to see. He must be thinking, 'how do I buy a break here?'"
Pundits' Reaction
McCoist then replied: "It's so unlucky because the defender bumps him offside, it's unbelievable. How's your luck? There's no getting away from it, it's offside but a great degree of sympathy for the goalscorer."
