Kobbie Mainoo on Verge of Signing New Manchester United Contract
Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo is reportedly close to finalising a new contract with the club, as confirmed by manager Michael Carrick. The 20-year-old's current deal is set to expire in the summer of 2027, but negotiations for an improved agreement are progressing positively.
Substantial Wage Increase Expected
Mainoo is anticipated to earn approximately £120,000 per week under the new terms, a significant rise from his current weekly wage of around £25,000. This development highlights his growing importance to the team under Carrick's management.

Michael Carrick expressed optimism regarding the ongoing discussions, stating, "It's getting closer, so we're positive about that. We're calm with it, but we're positive with it and time will tell how it goes. But at the moment, we are in a good place." This marks a notable turnaround for Mainoo, who had previously fallen out of favour under former manager Ruben Amorim.
Remarkable Career Resurgence
Mainoo's potential new contract signifies a dramatic resurgence in his career. After scoring in Manchester United's 2-1 FA Cup final victory over Manchester City in May 2024 and impressing for England during the European Championship that summer, he struggled for playing time under Amorim this season. However, since Carrick took charge, Mainoo has become an ever-present in the lineup, earning a recall to the England national team.
Manchester United's Champions League Ambitions
As United prepare to host Leeds on Monday night, Carrick emphasised the club's focus on securing Champions League qualification. When asked if failing to achieve this goal would be acceptable, he responded, "I wouldn't accept it, no. But it's not so much accepting it, it's about trying to finish as high as you possibly can. We'll see how we get on." The match against Leeds on 4 January proved to be Amorim's final game, with Carrick unexpectedly taking over shortly after.
Carrick's Unexpected Appointment
Reflecting on his appointment, Carrick admitted he did not foresee becoming manager while on holiday in Barbados. "I watched the games but there wasn't really any sign of it at that stage, so I was supporting from afar and enjoying time with the family," he said. "That's why we can never take anything for granted and why you live in the present and keep trying to improve."
Defensive Changes for Upcoming Match
In team news, Lisandro Martínez is expected to replace the suspended Harry Maguire in defence for the upcoming fixture. The Argentinian defender last featured in the 1-1 draw at West Ham on 10 February due to a calf injury, adding depth to United's backline as they aim for a strong finish to the season.
