Harry Maguire's Ban Extended by FA for Swearing at Official After Red Card
Maguire's Ban Extended for Swearing at Official After Red Card

The Football Association has disclosed the detailed reasons behind their decision to impose an additional one-match suspension on Harry Maguire, following his red card incident during Manchester United's Premier League clash with Bournemouth last month. This revelation comes after the FA released the official findings from their disciplinary hearing, shedding light on the misconduct charges upheld against the defender.

Incident and Initial Suspension

Maguire was shown a straight red card by referee Stuart Attwell in the 78th minute of Manchester United's 2-2 draw against Bournemouth on March 20. The dismissal resulted from a foul on Bournemouth player Evanilson, which led to Maguire missing United's subsequent 2-1 home defeat to bitter rivals Leeds United on Monday night.

FA Misconduct Charge and Hearing

Earlier this week, the FA confirmed that Maguire's ban has been extended to two games after they upheld a misconduct charge against him. The charge alleged that Maguire acted in an improper manner and used abusive and insulting words towards the fourth official at the Vitality Stadium following his dismissal.

The FA's findings report that Maguire swore at fourth official Matt Donohue after being sent off, declaring, 'You're a joke. You're all a f***ing joke.' However, Maguire denied these specific allegations in his defence, stating, 'I did not use abusive and/or insulting words towards the fourth official or any other match official. As I left the field of play following my dismissal I said something along the lines of "it is a f***ing joke". I am certain that I did not call the Fourth Official or any Match Official, a joke or use any other form of insult.'

Impact on Manchester United

As a result of the FA's decision, Maguire will now be suspended for Manchester United's crucial away fixture against top-five rivals Chelsea on Saturday night. This suspension compounds United's defensive woes, as they are also likely to be without centre-back Lisandro Martinez, who is facing a three-match ban for a red card received in the match against Leeds.

With Martinez potentially unavailable and Matthijs de Ligt still sidelined due to injury since November 30, United's defensive options are severely limited. This could force manager Michael Carrick to field a young centre-back pairing of 20-year-old Leny Yoro and 19-year-old Ayden Heaven against Chelsea.

Manager's Response and Team Challenges

Manchester United have struggled in the three games this season where Yoro and Heaven have started together, failing to secure a victory and conceding seven goals against Bournemouth, Aston Villa, and Leeds. Despite this, Carrick remains optimistic, stating, 'That's why we have a squad. We have got players that we can call upon. We will go there and look forward to the game.'

Carrick also expressed hope that Martinez might still be available, saying, 'Hopefully Licha [Martinez] is still available. I certainly think he should be after that [red card], but we will see.' Additionally, he commented on the absence of midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, who missed the defeat to Leeds, noting that he hopes Mainoo's absence 'won't be too long.'

The FA's disciplinary actions highlight the ongoing challenges for Manchester United as they navigate suspensions and injuries in a critical phase of the Premier League season.
