Maguire: United players let Carrick down after loss

Harry Maguire has admitted that Manchester United's players have let Michael Carrick down after the team lost 3-0 to Bournemouth in the Premier League on Sunday.

The defeat was United's second heavy loss in a week, following an embarrassing Champions League result against Como that had already thrown Carrick's future into doubt. The United boss is now likely to lose his job after the heavy defeat at Bournemouth.

Poor run of form

The Reds have won just two of their 12 games across all competitions this season. Carrick has failed to build on an excellent interim stint which saw him pick up more points than any other manager in the top-flight.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the loss, Maguire said the players must take responsibility for United's current plight.

"You have to look after your own performances and take responsibility. This is a huge club and every day you have to prove why you're wearing this badge," Maguire said.

"At the moment we're not doing enough as players. Michael turned our season on its head last year and we played brilliant football and got brilliant results. This season we haven't performed well enough as individuals."

Defeat to Bournemouth

Maguire also reflected on the performance against Bournemouth, saying: "It [the performance vs Bournemouth] wasn't good enough. Disappointed to give a goal away so early - another set play - and conceding first in the Premier League makes it difficult.

"A mistake for the second makes it hard for ourselves. We didn't perform well enough as individuals or as a team and we didn't deserve anything from the game."

He added: "It's not clicking at the moment. Results are not good enough, and performances in the last week are not good enough. Still early in the season.

"We have got to find something, question yourself, look in the mirror - that's the most important thing - think what you can do more and what more you can contribute to the team and if we do that we'll get somewhere."

Players must improve

When asked if there will be honest conversations among players, Maguire responded: "If those conversations happen it will remain private. We want to do more, be better and get better results."

He concluded: "At the moment it's nowhere near good enough and something needs to change."
