Harry Maguire Slams England Referee for Allowing Horror Tackle on Phil Foden
England's players were left fuming after Phil Foden was on the receiving end of a nasty tackle from Ronald Araujo, with Harry Maguire stunned that the defender was not given his marching orders. The incident occurred during England's draw with Uruguay at Wembley, sparking controversy and post-match criticism from the Three Lions camp.
Controversial Challenge Escapes Red Card
Harry Maguire expressed his disbelief that referee Sven Jablonski allowed Ronald Araujo to escape a red card following a controversial tackle on Phil Foden. Foden, who has been on the periphery of the Manchester City team recently, played for England but was scythed down by the Barcelona defender in a challenge that saw Araujo initially win the ball before following through aggressively and making contact with Foden's ankle.
The England ace immediately hit the deck in pain, prompting boss Thomas Tuchel to fume on the touchline. Despite heavy protests from the home side, Araujo managed to stay on the pitch, a decision that Maguire found tough to accept.
Maguire's Strong Words on Refereeing Standards
Maguire admitted that such tackles are always worthy of a red card and criticised the referee for not imposing firmer punishment. In an interview with ITV, he said: "You don't see tackles like that and not get red cards. A couple of months from the World Cup and we've got referees allowing tackles like that... It's disappointing. We have to move on and manage the game better and come away with the victory. It was a good work out there, many positives and things to work on as well."
Foden, clearly in pain, had to be replaced by Cole Palmer minutes later, and Tuchel appeared to make his feelings clear to the fourth official after witnessing the tackle. This was not the only controversial decision of the night, as Uruguay scored a late penalty to rescue a draw.
Late Penalty Adds to England's Frustration
Ben White, who had put the hosts ahead with a goal, was penalised by VAR in stoppage time for a challenge on Federico Vinas. After a quick check on the monitor, a penalty was awarded, and Real Madrid ace Federico Valverde hammered home from 12 yards, denying England a win.
This left White with a mixed night following his return to the England fold after several years away under the previous regime. Maguire felt the penalty given against White was extremely soft, commenting on his teammate: "A bit crazy, scoring the first goal. I thought he was brilliant when he came on. I can't say anything about the defending for that one [the penalty] - if that was me in that position I'd be attempting to block the shot as well. That's what we've got to do. That's a real soft penalty."
The match highlighted ongoing concerns about refereeing standards and player safety, with England now looking ahead to future fixtures as they prepare for the upcoming World Cup.
