Harry Maguire Commits to Manchester United with New Deal and Salary Reduction
Harry Maguire has reaffirmed his commitment to Manchester United by signing a one-year contract extension, with an option for an additional season, taking his stay at the club potentially to 2027. In a significant move, the 33-year-old defender has agreed to a wage reduction from his previous deal, which was worth £190,000 per week and set to expire this summer.
'The Ultimate Honour' to Represent United
Maguire expressed his pride in continuing his journey with the Red Devils, stating, "Representing Manchester United is the ultimate honour. It is a responsibility that makes myself and my family proud every single day." He added, "I am delighted to extend my journey at this incredible club to at least eight seasons and continue to play in front of our special supporters to create more amazing moments together."
The centre-back highlighted the club's ambition, saying, "You can feel the ambition and potential of this exciting squad. The determination throughout the whole club to fight for major trophies is clear for everyone to see and I am confident that our best moments together remain ahead of us."
Resurgence Under Michael Carrick
After struggling under previous manager Ruben Amorim, which cast doubt on his future, Maguire has become an integral part of the team under interim boss Michael Carrick. He has been an ever-present since Carrick took over, earning a recall to the England squad last month. His two appearances in recent friendlies have put him in contention for selection for this summer's World Cup.
Maguire's experience and leadership have been valued by the club, especially following the confirmation that Casemiro will depart in the summer. Originally appointed captain by Ole Gunnar Solskjær within six months of his £80 million move from Leicester in 2019—making him the world's most expensive defender at the time—Maguire was stripped of the captaincy by Erik ten Hag in 2023, who had intended to sell him.
Club Praise and Future Prospects
Jason Wilcox, Manchester United's director of football, praised Maguire's professionalism, stating, "Harry represents the mentality and resilience required to perform for Manchester United. He is the ultimate professional who brings invaluable experience and leadership to our young, ambitious squad."
With 266 appearances for United, Maguire has won the League Cup and FA Cup during his tenure. The club is currently battling for a Champions League place, and Maguire is with the squad in Dublin, taking advantage of a three-and-a-half-week break between fixtures due to the international break and early exits from domestic cup competitions.
In related news, teammate Amad Diallo voiced support for Carrick to be appointed head coach permanently, saying, "He's been very great, he's been doing so much for the team. He has a lot of experience, he knows the club and has the DNA. We think he's the right man."
