Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has been charged by the Football Association (FA) following his red card in the 2-2 draw with Bournemouth on March 20. The 33-year-old was sent off for pulling down Evanilson in the penalty area, conceding a spot-kick in the process.
The Premier League match centre confirmed that the referee's decision was upheld by VAR, deeming it a holding offence with no attempt to play the ball. Maguire now faces an FA charge for allegedly acting improperly and using abusive or insulting words towards the fourth official after his dismissal.
Maguire has until April 2 to respond to the charge. If proven, he could face an extended suspension or a fine, in addition to the automatic one-match ban for the red card, which he will serve against Leeds United after the international break.
The England international is currently available for the crucial top-four clash against Chelsea on April 18, but any additional punishment could rule him out of that fixture, a significant blow for head coach Michael Carrick.
