Liverpool had earlier equalised through Cody Gakpo, who cancelled out Bryan Mbeumo's early goal. But Gakpo missed a close-range header minutes before Maguire's winner, summing up a frustrating day for the hosts, who hit the woodwork three times.
The result marked United's first back-to-back league victories under manager Ruben Amorim, while Liverpool suffered a third successive league defeat, leaving them four points behind leaders Arsenal. Virgil van Dijk lamented his side's rushed decision-making and lack of cohesion.
Mbeumo opened the scoring in the first minute after a quick break from United, finishing from a tight angle. Fernandes also hit the post in a first half that saw chances at both ends. Liverpool pushed hard after the break, but United held firm, with Matheus Cunha impressing in midfield.
