Harry Maguire Handed Additional Ban for 'Joke' Comment to Officials
Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has been given an extra one-match suspension by the Football Association for his reaction to being sent off during a Premier League match against Bournemouth. The 33-year-old will now miss United's upcoming trip to Chelsea, compounding defensive woes for the team.
Incident at the Vitality Stadium
Maguire was shown a red card in the 78th minute of the game at the Vitality Stadium last month for a foul on Evanilson in the penalty area. This led to a penalty scored by Eli Junior Kroupi, resulting in a 2-2 draw for Bournemouth. Following his dismissal, officials reported that Maguire made derogatory remarks as he left the field.
FA's Findings and Penalty
The FA's written reasons detailed that fourth official Matthew Donohue submitted an Extraordinary Incident Report Form, alleging Maguire shouted, "You're a joke. You're all a fucking joke." Maguire contested this, claiming he said something similar to "it is a fucking joke" without directly insulting the official. However, an independent Regulatory Commission found him guilty of acting improperly and using abusive language, resulting in a one-match ban and a £30,000 fine.
Impact on Manchester United
This additional suspension adds to Manchester United's defensive crisis. Maguire had already missed a 2-1 home defeat to Leeds due to the initial red card. He now joins fellow centre-backs Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martínez on the sidelines. De Ligt has been out since November with a back issue, while Martínez begins a three-match ban after being sent off for pulling an opponent's hair in the Leeds match.
Manager's Reaction and Team Adjustments
United head coach Michael Carrick expressed frustration over Martínez's ban, calling it "one of the worst I've seen," and the club has appealed the decision. With key defenders unavailable, young players like 19-year-old Ayden Heaven and 20-year-old Leny Yoro may be called upon to shore up the defence against Chelsea.
The FA emphasized that Maguire admitted to the charge, highlighting the seriousness of maintaining respect towards match officials in football. This incident underscores ongoing challenges for Manchester United as they navigate a congested fixture list and squad shortages.
