Harry Maguire insisted Manchester United's dressing room is "fully behind" Michael Carrick after the team lost 3-0 to Bournemouth in the Premier League on Sunday. The result pushed Carrick closer to the brink at Old Trafford, following a heavy defeat to Como earlier in the season.
The 44-year-old head coach looked emotional as he applauded fans after the full-time whistle, although he said it was not a farewell. United's board will decide his future after a dismal start to the campaign, with the Reds winning just two of their 12 games in all competitions.
Maguire admits lack of confidence
"There's a lack of confidence at the moment," Maguire admitted during an interview with BBC Match of the Day. "The results, the performances, we have to look at ourselves and find something within ourselves to bring more to the team. That's every player that I'm talking about."
"When things aren't going your way you have to do the basics well and conceding set plays, a simple set play is just nowhere near good enough," he added. "It's an individual thing - we have to stick together as a team. So early on in the season - we can still have a good season but something has got to change quick. It's been disappointing, that has to change."
Squad backing for Carrick
"When you play for this club you know you're two or three games away from that happening," Maguire said. "You have to find something within yourself to help the club, help the team and get out of this. We will start winning football matches but we have to do it quickly."
Asked whether the squad backed Carrick to continue, he replied: "We're fully behind Michael [Carrick], coming into the team last season he turned things around and got Champions League football this season. As individuals, we're not playing well enough."
