Mac Allister: Iraola changed Liverpool after Slot struggles

Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has revealed that Andoni Iraola has 'changed' the club after 'something wasn't right' under former boss Arne Slot. Slot was sacked at the end of last season and replaced by the former Bournemouth manager.

Iraola's Impact at Anfield

Slot led Liverpool to the Premier League title in his first season but could not repeat that success in his second campaign despite heavy backing in the transfer window. Iraola has taken charge of 11 matches so far, winning seven, drawing three and losing once.

On Tuesday night, Liverpool beat Spanish side Valencia 4-3 at Anfield in the Champions League. Mac Allister scored twice, with Ronald Araujo and Florian Wirtz also on target. A late strike from Tani Oluwaseyi made for a tense finish, but the Reds held on for all three points.

Mac Allister's Honest Assessment

Speaking to Amazon Prime after the match, Mac Allister said: "Last year was a really difficult year for all of us. It's clear that I was not at the level and I'm the first one to say - I have no problem. Something wasn't right in the group and this manager changed it."

He added: "That's really important. The way we play, it is quite different - I don't like to compare, but I'm feeling good right now and that's what I want, and that's what I enjoy."

Context Behind Last Season's Struggles

Some of the difficulties early last season may have been linked to the squad coping with the tragic death of teammate Diogo Jota, who died in a car accident in Portugal last summer along with his brother Andre Silva.

The summer also brought significant squad changes, with high-profile signings including Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike and Wirtz arriving, while Trent Alexander-Arnold and Luis Diaz departed. Liverpool finished fifth in the Premier League, 25 points behind champions Arsenal, with the European coefficient securing them an additional Champions League spot.
