Luke Littler endured a hostile reception from the Rotterdam crowd as he fell to a 6-4 defeat against Premier League leader Jonny Clayton in the final on Thursday night. The world number one was relentlessly booed throughout the 11th night of action, a response stemming from his spat with Dutch darts player Gian van Veen two weeks ago in Manchester.
Dutch Fans Unforgiving After Van Veen Incident
The jeers began early and persisted, with Dutch fans refusing to forgive Littler for the altercation with their compatriot. Despite the intense atmosphere, the 19-year-old started strongly, determined to maintain his composure. He secured an opening 6-2 victory over Gerwyn Price, punctuated by a fist pump after a 124 checkout.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Littler acknowledged the expected hostility: "Exactly what I expected, the boos and whistles, but I knew as soon as I got on stage I could do my job." This win could have set up a highly anticipated rematch with Van Veen, but Luke Humphries intervened with a 6-2 win over the Dutchman, denying that showdown.
Thrilling Semi-Final and Final Showdown
In the semi-final against Humphries, Littler responded to the crowd with gestures that seemed to energize him, building a 5-2 lead. However, Humphries fought back fiercely, pushing the match to a decider before Littler eked out a narrow 6-5 victory. Meanwhile, Clayton's path to the final included a 6-2 win over Michael van Gerwen, disappointing home fans, followed by a hard-fought 6-5 triumph against Josh Rock.
The final pitted the season's top two players against each other. Littler made a storming start, opening with a 180 in an 11-dart leg and breaking throw to take an early lead. But he failed to extend it to 3-0, allowing Clayton to seize control. The Welshman displayed superior form, clinching a 6-4 victory that extends his lead at the top of the Premier League table by five points.
Clayton Reflects on Anniversary Victory
After the match, Clayton expressed surprise at his performance: "I don't know what happened there. I had to do something special because it is my 20th anniversary tonight and I did forget, so maybe this makes it all right." He praised Littler, saying, "Luke's an amazing darts player. But this old dog has got some life in him yet." Clayton highlighted his resilience: "I started out slow but, the chances, you've got to take, and I've taken them again tonight, and that's all that counts."
The night in Rotterdam underscored the intense rivalries and passionate fan dynamics in professional darts, with Littler's previous actions continuing to influence his reception on the road.
