Liverpool's title hopes fade in Arsenal defeat

Arsenal secured a 1-0 victory at Anfield, their first Premier League win at Liverpool since 2012, moving three points clear at the top of the table. Kai Havertz's early goal proved decisive as the champions withstood sustained Liverpool pressure.

Arsenal's defensive resilience

Mikel Arteta celebrated his first win at Liverpool as Arsenal manager, with his players lining up to accept acclaim from the away section. Gabriel Magalhães and Declan Rice were prominent in absorbing Liverpool's pressure in the second half.

The hosts should have had a penalty for Jurriën Timber tugging Alexander Isak's shirt, while Florian Wirtz struck the crossbar and Alexis Mac Allister squandered a free header from 10 yards out. Virgil van Dijk collected a post-match booking for sarcastically applauding referee Andy Madley.

Liverpool's attacking struggles

Liverpool failed to register a shot on target in a Premier League game for the first time in 16 years. Van Dijk operated as a makeshift centre-forward in the final exchanges, supported by Isak, Barcola and substitutes Lewis Koumas, Victor Muñoz and Rio Ngumoha.

Andoni Iraola admitted the penalty decision was contentious but focused on improvement. "I think it's a penalty but we need to think about what we can improve to be on the right side of these big games," he said.

Nyoni's debut

Trey Nyoni made his first Premier League start, with Ryan Gravenberch dropped to the bench alongside the fit-again Dominik Szoboszlai. The 19-year-old impressed Iraola since joining in the summer and stepped up on the pre-season tour of the US.

Nyoni conceded the game's first free-kick after 49 seconds and caught Havertz's ankle in the 10th minute, but showed composure and intelligence on the ball. He was replaced by Szoboszlai in the 59th minute as Liverpool chased the game.

Despite the anguish over Arsenal's tactics and the referee's performance, the gap between the champions and potential contenders was clear. Iraola's team will face harsh lessons as they develop under his management.
