Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson is expected to be sidelined for three months after requiring surgery on a shoulder injury sustained while on international duty with Scotland. The 29-year-old damaged his shoulder in a collision with Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón during Scotland's 2-0 defeat in Sevilla last Thursday.
Robertson returned to Liverpool for assessment by a specialist, who confirmed the need for an operation. The Scotland captain has played every minute of Liverpool's eight Premier League games this season, making him a key figure for manager Jürgen Klopp.
Klopp confirmed the decision to proceed with surgery, stating: 'I think the decision is we go towards surgery. There is a little chance we could try without but talking to pretty much all experts it looks like surgery will be the best thing, especially in the long term definitely, and that means he is out for a while.'
The surgery is scheduled for next week, with the full extent of the injury and recovery time to be determined after the operation. Klopp estimated a three-month absence, saying: 'In my experience, you only see the real extent of the injury when they look in it, properly open it and fix it, but around three months.'
Robertson's absence casts doubt on his participation in Euro 2024, should Scotland qualify. The defender is known for quick recoveries, but Klopp emphasised the importance of ensuring the shoulder structure is correct before he returns to full training.
