Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers for £62.5 million, triggering the release clause in his contract. The 26-year-old becomes the club's first acquisition of the summer transfer window, subject to visa and registration.
Cunha was pictured in Manchester on Sunday morning before heading on international duty. United manager Ruben Amorim has prioritised strengthening his attacking options after a disappointing campaign in which the team finished 15th in the Premier League and failed to qualify for European football. United were the fifth-lowest scorers in the top flight.
Cunha is expected to operate as one of the two number 10s in Amorim's 3-4-2-1 system. He scored 17 goals and provided six assists last season, earning Wolves' Players' Player of the Season award. The Brazilian has previously played for Atletico Madrid, Hertha Berlin, RB Leipzig and FC Sion, and has 13 caps for Brazil.
United initially proposed paying the release clause in five instalments, but Wolves rejected the offer. The Red Devils subsequently agreed to meet the full terms. Cunha joined Wolves on loan in January 2023 before making the move permanent for £43 million that summer.
Cunha expressed his admiration for Amorim, saying: 'Talking about him is easy, I think he's a great coach and I wish him nothing but the best. I hope he conquers the world as he did Portugal.' The forward will join his new teammates for the start of pre-season training in July.
