Liverpool's Champions League campaign came to a disappointing conclusion as they were eliminated by Paris Saint-Germain, suffering a 4-0 aggregate defeat in the quarter-finals. The match at Anfield saw a spirited second-leg performance from the Reds, but their inability to convert chances proved costly, compounded by a worrying injury to forward Hugo Ekitiké.
Missed Opportunities and Defensive Resilience
Manager Arne Slot praised his team's effort and the support of the fans, highlighting a dominant display against the European champions. "I have to give a lot of credit to the players for how hard they worked and to the fans for helping us execute our gameplan by always getting behind us," Slot said. "Unfortunately, it was another example of us not being able to score from one of the many chances we had."
Despite creating numerous opportunities, Liverpool failed to find the net, with Ousmane Dembélé sealing PSG's victory with two late goals. Slot reflected on the match's turning points, noting, "We are very disappointed because there were parts of the second half where you could feel, 'If we could just score now, this could become a very special night.'" He remained optimistic about the team's future, stating, "The future looks very bright for this team, for this club. We have showed we can compete with the champions of Europe in our stadium."
Ekitiké's Injury Casts a Shadow
The match took a grim turn in the 27th minute when Hugo Ekitiké went down under no pressure from any PSG player, sustaining a suspected achilles injury. He was carried off on a stretcher, with Slot expressing grave concerns. "It looks really bad but we don't know how bad yet," the manager admitted. "We all see the video and the clips, it doesn't look good."
Slot detailed the impact on the squad, revealing, "For only 88 minutes until tonight we have played with Florian [Wirtz], Alex [Alexander Isak] and Hugo, and we added about 27 to that tonight. I would be surprised if we add any more minutes to that this season." However, he offered a silver lining with the return of Alex Isak, adding, "The good thing is, Alex is back."
Controversial Decisions and Season Struggles
Slot also touched on perceived injustices, referencing a penalty decision that went against Liverpool. "I think probably last week we had too much luck and we ran out of luck today," he remarked. "If a pen is given, usually VAR tells you, 'I see contact and I support the on-field decision.' I wasn't surprised that this went against us, it's happened so often this season, but that wasn't the story of the game."
This exit marks a significant setback for Liverpool, who had hoped to replicate past European comebacks at Anfield. The team's focus now shifts to domestic competitions and recovery, with Ekitiké's injury likely to be a key concern in the coming weeks.
