Liverpool secured their first Premier League win under Andoni Iraola with a 2-0 victory over Ipswich Town at Portman Road on Friday night. The Reds, who had drawn their opening two games, showed a new pragmatic side to their game, managing the match effectively after an early two-goal blitz.
Iraola, appointed in June, was praised for his side's control in a game where they had long periods without the ball in the second half. Speaking after the match, he said: "I'm very pleased with the win obviously. We needed this win. Also with the performance. I think especially in the first half."
Early goals set the tone
Liverpool stormed into a two-goal lead within 10 minutes, with Alexander Isak scoring twice from Cody Gakpo assists. The opening 10 minutes saw the Reds press high, win the ball six times in Ipswich's defensive half, and dominate possession with 71.3% of the ball. Gakpo was the creator-in-chief, providing incisive passes, including a stunning trivela pass for Isak's second goal.
Isak's performance was his best since his £125m move from Newcastle, with his clinical finishing effectively ending the contest early. Gakpo, meanwhile, won eight of his 11 ground duels and continued his impressive form, with all three of Isak's league goals this season coming from his assists.
Pragmatic second-half display
After the early flurry, Liverpool's approach became more considered. Ipswich woke up after the second goal, but the Reds managed the game well, with Dominik Szoboszlai and Florian Wirtz central to keeping the home side at bay. Szoboszlai tested the keeper with three shots on target, while Wirtz was involved in 15 duels, the most of any player on the pitch.
As the game progressed, Liverpool's attacking threat diminished, but Iraola showed a willingness to compromise. He introduced Ryan Gravenberch and Bradley Barcola, shifting to a back three with Araujo moving inside. The plan worked, with the Reds making eight clearances in the final period to secure a comfortable win.
Defensive resilience and future prospects
Virgil van Dijk was imperious, winning all five of his duels and all three of his tackles, while Ronald Araujo was monstrous in defence, winning nine of 10 duels and making nine clearances. The pair's performances were crucial in a second half where Liverpool played just 12.8% of their passes in Ipswich's final third.
Iraola's willingness to adapt and protect a lead is a positive sign for Liverpool's season, though questions remain over midfield balance and the form of Milos Kerkez. With the transfer market closed, the squad's limitations are clear, but this victory shows Liverpool can win ugly when needed. As the season wears on, this trait could prove vital.
