Jeremy Jacquet appears set to be available for Liverpool against Manchester City, while Federico Chiesa is on course for a return. The central defender, along with Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo, had emerged as a major doubt for Sunday’s Premier League showdown at Anfield after missing France’s final Nations League match earlier in the week.
Jacquet trains after hamstring strain
Jacquet made his senior debut for Les Bleus during the international break, starting the 1-0 win in Belgium and then the home draw with Italy before missing the 4-1 victory over the Red Devils. The French Football Federation (FFF) announced the defender was suffering from “strain to his left hamstring”, hence his absence from the matchday squad.
Since that update, Liverpool have released footage from training, with Jacquet present for the session on Thursday which would suggest he has made a swift recovery. Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola is expected to provide a further update on the France international when he addresses the media in Friday’s pre-Man City press conference, though the signs are positive.
Chiesa returns to training
Also present during the session at the club’s AXA Training Centre was Federico Chiesa. The Italian has sat out the first seven games of the season due to what was described as a “small muscle injury” in his back sustained during the friendly against Como in August.
While Chiesa could be in line to make his first appearance of the season, neither Isak and Gakpo were spotted in training after withdrawing from international duty with knocks. “I think Alex Isak and Cody Gakpo both have had to leave the national teams with injuries,” Iraola said. “Now it's a matter of if they are going to recover in time to help us in the next game or not. But right now they are both injured.”
