Liverpool staged a remarkable comeback from 2-0 down to defeat Villarreal 4-3 at Anfield, maintaining their perfect Champions League record. Eighteen-year-old Rio Ngumoha delivered two assists and a man-of-the-match performance in a thrilling contest.
Early Errors Punished
Villarreal took the lead within four minutes when Renato Veiga's long ball exposed Virgil van Dijk, whose misplaced header allowed Georges Mikautadze to fire past Alisson Becker. Nathan Saliba's pass then split the defence, with Kostas Tsimikas playing Sergi Cardona onside as the defender slipped the ball past the goalkeeper.
Liverpool pulled one back after 36 minutes when Alexis Mac Allister flicked home Tsimikas' near-post corner. Deep into first-half stoppage time, Ngumoha's teasing cross found Ronald Araujo, who headed in to level the scores.
Second-Half Surge
Manager Andoni Iraola substituted Araujo at half-time, bringing on Florian Wirtz to push for the win. Ngumoha then tore down the right, beat two defenders, and cut the ball back for Mac Allister to smash home. Cody Gakpo set up Wirtz for the fourth, who fired into the far corner.
Villarreal substitute Tani Oluwaseyi scored a late third to set up a tense finish, but Liverpool held on for the victory.
