Plans for a major new Beatles attraction in Liverpool city centre have been welcomed, with The Beatles Story set to move from the Albert Dock to the former St John's Market site in 2028. The multi-million-pound development, announced by Apple Corps Ltd, the company founded by the Beatles, includes transforming the iconic St Johns Beacon into a Yellow Submarine-themed viewing experience.
The new attraction will offer around 100,000 square feet of space in the former St John's Market Hall, more than four times the footprint of the current Beatles Story. Visitors will be able to immerse themselves in the band's story, from their early days in Liverpool to their rise to global superstardom, with recreated locations including The Cavern, Abbey Road, Shea Stadium and Savile Row, using immersive technology, original artefacts and reconstructed sets.
Public Reaction and Comparisons
The plans have been compared to Graceland and Dollywood, major attractions dedicated to Elvis Presley and Dolly Parton in the United States. The announcement has sparked excitement among Scousers, with many taking to social media to share their thoughts.
Paul Bhatia welcomed the news, writing: "It's amazing to hear this news. It's really going to put Liverpool on the map (even though it already is). Exciting times ahead." Another user said: "Love seeing the tourists those four lads bring into our city. Brilliant news." Anthony Baines added: "This is going to be amazing for the city." James Crompton welcomed the plans for the buildings themselves, saying: "Great news. At least St John's beacon and the surrounding buildings will be well used, rather than see everything demolished or boarded up."
Support from Beatles and Officials
Sir Paul McCartney described the landmark plans as "extraordinary," while Ringo Starr said the vision for the attraction is "far out." Prime Minister Andy Burnham said the Fab Four vision for his home city shows "the kind of ambition I want to see more of across Britain."
Apple Corps is expected to take over the running of The Beatles Story at its current location in 2027, ahead of the move to St John's in 2028. The development is being delivered through a partnership involving Apple Corps, Liverpool City Council and Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, with support from central government.
Community Benefits and Next Steps
The project will include a commitment to supporting emerging local talent, with proceeds from every ticket to The Beatles Story going towards the Apple Corps Liverpool Trust, a charitable initiative designed to support Liverpool artists and cultural projects. The St Johns Beacon experience will offer panoramic 360-degree views across Liverpool, celebrating the city's musical heritage and famous landmarks.
