The Great British Bake Off bid farewell to another baker on Tuesday (October 20) as Yannis became the fifth contestant eliminated from the Channel 4 show during Dessert Week.
For the first time this series, the remaining bakers faced a staggered-start signature challenge centered on self-saucing puddings. The altered format meant contestants waited nervously for their names to be called by presenters Alison Hammond and Noel Fielding, and it also prevented them from seeking help from fellow bakers if they encountered difficulties.
Technical Challenge and Showstopper
Judge Nigella Lawson unveiled the technical challenge, instructing participants to select ingredients from The Gingham Pantry to add a personal touch to their creations. Each baker had just five minutes to gather everything needed, and any oversights left them struggling later on.
For the showstopper round, the bakers attempted to present an array of traditional retro puddings, which proved particularly challenging to execute successfully.
Yannis's Exit and Fan Reaction
Connie secured Star Baker honours, while Yannis was confirmed as the fifth baker eliminated. Following the announcement, the pediatrician, who was born in Vienna and lives in London, embraced his fellow competitors.
He said: "Thank you, it has been a pleasure. I grew up watching this programme and being here for five weeks is surreal." Yannis went on to say: "I will be very proud of that and it's been absolutely wonderful."
Bake Off devotees were left "heartbroken" at Yannis's exit. On X, one viewer wrote: "YANNIS NOOOOOO #GBBO", while another said: "Poor Yannis". A third commented: "Ooh. Wasn't expecting Yannis to go #gbbo", and another remarked: "Awh poor Yannis, but the right person to go tbh. Until next week tho #GBBO."
One more viewer added: "Gutted for Yannis but yayyyy star baker auntie Connie! #gbbo".
The Great British Bake Off airs Tuesday at 8:00 PM on Channel 4.
