Liverpool have secured the signing of highly-rated 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha, beating Manchester United in the race for his signature. The teenager joined the Reds last summer after an eight-year stint at Chelsea's academy, with former manager Jurgen Klopp playing an indirect but crucial role in the deal.
Ngumoha, considered one of Chelsea's brightest prospects, had discussions with Manchester United last June. However, United bosses admitted defeat, believing they were trailing Liverpool in the race for his signature. The Athletic reports that Klopp's reputation for promoting young players was a key factor in Ngumoha's decision.
Klopp's approach was exemplified in Liverpool's Carabao Cup final triumph over Chelsea last year, where he fielded six academy graduates. This included Caoimhin Kelleher, Conor Bradley, Jayden Danns, Bobby Clark, James McConnell, and Jarell Quansah. The Daily Mail suggested that Ngumoha's choice was inspired by Klopp's track record of integrating youth into the first team.
Since joining Liverpool, Ngumoha has made his professional debut, starting in a 4-0 FA Cup victory against Accrington Stanley earlier this year. He has also impressed during pre-season, scoring a spectacular solo goal in a 4-1 win over Athletic Bilbao. He has four goals and assists in six games overall.
Ngumoha has spoken highly of training with Liverpool's first team, citing Mohamed Salah as a role model. 'Patience is key,' he said. 'I don't want to rush anything. They really help the young players – especially me, Trey Nyoni. They help us really settle in.'
