Arsenal, meanwhile, will rue the two-goal deficit but take heart from a resilient second-half display and the point that keeps them firmly on course for second place.
The result leaves both sides with work to do in the remaining weeks, but the drama at Anfield served as a reminder of the intensity at the top of English football, with the title race already decided but the battle for Champions League places still very much alive.
