World champion Luke Littler has clinched the inaugural Poland Darts Open title with a commanding 8-4 victory over Gian Van Veen in the final held in Krakow. The English darts star delivered a devastating performance, averaging just over 108 and hitting seven 180s to secure the win in the opening European Tour competition of the year.
Van Veen's Nine-Darter Not Enough
In a thrilling showdown, Dutch number one Gian Van Veen produced a moment of brilliance by hitting his first-ever televised nine-dart finish during the fifth leg of the match. This perfect leg, achieved with back-to-back 180s followed by a 141 checkout, briefly gave Van Veen the lead as he sought to avenge his World Championship final defeat to Littler.
Littler's Response and Path to Victory
However, the nine-darter only served to ignite Littler's competitive fire. The world champion responded emphatically, winning the next four legs to establish a commanding position. Van Veen showed flashes of clinical finishing with two ton-plus checkouts and managed to reduce the deficit to two legs, but it proved too little too late.
Littler's dominance was evident throughout the tournament. He comfortably dispatched opponents including Ross Smith, Josh Rock, and Chris Dobey on his way to the final. Meanwhile, Van Veen navigated a close encounter with Nathan Aspinall before defeating Wessel Nijman and world number two Luke Humphries.
Closing Moments and Tournament Significance
As the match reached its climax, Littler began hammering the treble 20 bed with multiple 180s, maintaining relentless pressure. Van Veen missed three crucial darts to extend the contest, allowing Littler to seal the victory with a double 10 checkout.
This triumph marks another significant achievement for Littler in what has been a remarkable period for the young darts sensation. The Poland Darts Open victory adds to his growing collection of titles and reinforces his status as one of the sport's premier competitors.
