Luke Littler Responds to Rotterdam Jeers with Professional Victory Over Gerwyn Price
The Premier League Darts event in Rotterdam witnessed a charged atmosphere as teenage sensation Luke Littler faced a hostile reception from the Dutch crowd. This followed his recent on-stage confrontation with Dutch darts player Gian van Veen earlier this month. Despite the persistent booing, Littler maintained his composure to secure a decisive 6-3 victory over former world champion Gerwyn Price.
Tensions from Manchester Spill Over into Rotterdam Arena
The animosity stemmed from a quarter-final clash in Manchester where Littler faced Gian van Veen. With the scores locked at 5-5, Van Veen narrowly missed a match dart at double 15. The Dutchman believed Littler had celebrated his miss, leading to a heated exchange. Van Veen stared down his opponent, while Littler responded with a 'crybaby' gesture directed at Van Veen, whipping his arms up to the crowd.
Although both players have since provided their accounts of the incident, the Dutch crowd in Rotterdam made their feelings abundantly clear. As Sky Sports aired footage of the confrontation, jeers echoed around the Rotterdam Ahoy arena even before Littler stepped up to the oche.
A Chorus of Boos Greets Every Move
The booing intensified as the match progressed, with the crowd erupting in cheers every time the teenager missed a dart. Yet, in a marked departure from his previous reactions, Littler chose to ignore the hostility entirely. He focused solely on his performance, sweeping aside the challenge from Price with clinical precision.
This composed response suggests the young player may have taken a lesson from his spat with Van Veen, opting for professionalism over provocation in a volatile environment.
Phil Taylor's Sage Advice on Handling Crowd Hostility
Sixteen-time world champion Phil Taylor had anticipated this reception and offered some words of wisdom to Littler earlier in the week. Speaking to The Sun, Taylor expressed confidence in Littler's mental toughness.
"I think Luke's tough enough to ride it out," Taylor stated. "The only way with fans is you've got to perform on stage. If he performs like he can, he'll get them back."
Taylor also highlighted the challenging schedule ahead for Littler, including upcoming events in Liverpool and Scotland where he is likely to face similar hostility, particularly as a Manchester United fan playing in Liverpool.
"He's going to get it - so get some earplugs!" Taylor quipped. "But I think he's capable of dealing with it. He's not a bad lad. He could go up there and think 'I'm going to show you how good I am' and play brilliantly."
The darts legend also offered crucial advice regarding social media, urging Littler to avoid engaging with online criticism. "If I was to advise Luke I'd say keep off social media. Don't put anything on. Don't do it. Don't rise to it. Leave it alone."
Littler's victory in Rotterdam not only demonstrated his growing maturity but also strengthened his position in the Premier League standings as he continues his impressive debut season on the professional circuit.
