Brisbane Lions Captain Firmly Rejects Culture Questions After Neale Separation
Brisbane Lions co-captain Harris Andrews has emphatically dismissed any external questioning of the club's culture following the breakdown of teammate Lachie Neale's marriage. The 29-year-old key defender, who will share captaincy duties with Josh Dunkley and Hugh McCluggage this season, stated that club leadership has actively addressed the situation with players.
Internal Confidence Versus External Scrutiny
'I'm really confident as someone who's been co-captain for the last four years that we have a great culture internally,' Andrews told Code Sports. 'I see the day-to-day. I see what happens. It's something that might be questioned externally and that's not justified, I don't think.'
The defender explained he can only base his assessment on daily observations at the club, where he sees 'a lot of hungry young footballers who want to improve their football but also be good citizens at the same time.'
Support System for Neale Family
Andrews revealed that senior coach Chris Fagan and football boss Danny Daly have spoken with the playing group about how to support both Lachie Neale and his former wife Julie. 'We talked about making sure we wrap our arms around Lach and wrap our arms around Jules, and just try and be supportive of all stakeholders,' Andrews said.
The co-captain added that teammates understood Neale's decision to step down from the captaincy to focus on personal matters. 'It was understandable for him to want to step away and focus on him for a bit, which as teammates we just want to see the best for Lach.'
Background to the Separation
Neale announced his separation from wife Julie at the beginning of the year, stating publicly: 'While I won't go into specifics, I can say that I have let my family down and I apologise for my actions that have let down those who are closest to me.'
The dual Brownlow Medallist emphasized that rebuilding trust and ensuring the wellbeing of their two children, Piper and Freddie, remained the top priority. Julie Neale had previously addressed speculation about their relationship on social media in December, writing: 'I want to make it very clear that I am not "working through" anything. I have been betrayed in the most unimaginable way.'
The freelance hairstylist has since moved back to Western Australia with the children, while Lachie has been traveling between Queensland and WA to maintain contact. Their marital home sold at auction for $3.2 million recently.
Additional Relationship Changes at the Club
The Lions have experienced other relationship changes among players in recent months:
- Jack Payne and partner Bronte Dagg have reportedly parted ways
- Will Ashcroft and Summer Finn have also separated
Leadership Transition and Premiership Ambitions
Andrews expressed gratitude for Neale's leadership guidance during their time as co-captains. 'From a captaincy standpoint, I really appreciate and admire what Lach's brought to the table,' he said. 'It's been a real privilege working closely with him in the leadership space and I've learned a lot from him.'
Looking ahead to the new season, Andrews acknowledged the challenge of pursuing a third consecutive premiership. 'It's going to be a good challenge for us this year – we're going to have every team in the comp coming for us,' he said, while expressing confidence in the team's work ethic and focus on gradual improvement.
Coach Chris Fagan has noted that Neale has been having one of his best pre-seasons despite the personal challenges. The Lions begin their AFL title defense against the Western Bulldogs on March 7, with Andrews emphasizing the importance of a strong start to the season.
