Lindsey Vonn's Alarming Health Update After Winter Olympics Crash
Winter Olympics star Lindsey Vonn has issued a concerning health update after a severe crash during the women's alpine skiing downhill final. The 41-year-old athlete fractured her left tibia in the incident and remains immobile, unable to stand over a week later.
Complex Injury and Multiple Surgeries
Vonn's injury has proven to be complex, requiring four surgeries to address the damage. She was initially treated at a hospital in Treviso, Italy, after being airlifted by helicopter from the piste in Cortina d'Ampezzo. Following a week of care, she was discharged on Sunday and has now flown back to the United States from Treviso airport to continue her rehabilitation journey.
Emotional Social Media Updates
In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Vonn shared her current condition, stating, "Haven't stood on my feet in over a week… been in a hospital bed immobile since my race. And although I'm not yet able to stand, being back on home soil feels amazing." She expressed gratitude to the medical staff in Italy for their care.
On Instagram, Vonn posted a heartfelt tribute to her support network, saying, "Thankful for friends, family, my team and all the medical staff that are getting me back to myself…. I'm slowly coming back to life, back to basics and the simple things in life that mean the most." She also shared an emotional video made by her sister, Karin Kildow, which brought her to tears.
Reflections on the Crash and Recovery
Vonn reflected on her mindset during the crash, emphasizing her willingness to take risks. She said, "I was willing to risk and push and sacrifice for something I knew I was absolutely capable of doing. I will always take the risk of crashing while giving it my all, rather than not ski to my potential and have regret."
She added that physically, she felt stronger than in past competitions, including when she ended her career in 2019 with a bronze medal at the World Championships. Mentally, Vonn described herself as "perfect—clear, focused, hungry, aggressive yet completely calm," noting her successful season with two wins and leading standings as preparation for the Olympics.
Looking Forward with Optimism
Despite the setback, Vonn remains optimistic about her future in skiing. She stated, "The ride was worth the fall. When I close my eyes at night, I don't have regrets, and the love I have for skiing remains. I am still looking forward to the moment when I can stand on the top of the mountain once more. And I will."
Her update comes as the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games continue, with coverage available on platforms like discovery+ via Prime Video for fans to watch live action.
