England women's football captain Leah Williamson has been named in the Lionesses squad for the first time since suffering a devastating ACL injury in April 2023. The Arsenal defender's return comes ahead of England's crucial UEFA Women's Nations League matches against Spain and Switzerland.
A Captain's Comeback
The 26-year-old centre-back, who led England to Euro 2022 glory, has endured a gruelling nine-month rehabilitation process. Her inclusion in Sarina Wiegman's 23-player squad marks a significant boost for the national team as they prepare for their final Nations League fixtures.
Road to Recovery
Williamson's injury occurred during Arsenal's Women's Super League match against Manchester United last season. The setback forced her to miss the 2023 Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, where England finished as runners-up.
"It's been a challenging journey," Williamson admitted in a recent interview. "But I've worked tirelessly with Arsenal's medical team to get back to full fitness. Representing England again means everything to me."
Squad Selection Surprises
While Williamson's return dominates headlines, Wiegman has also recalled Chelsea forward Fran Kirby after her own injury absence. However, there's no place for veteran midfielder Jill Scott, who recently announced her retirement from international football.
The Lionesses face Spain in Seville on 23rd February before hosting Switzerland at Molineux Stadium on 27th February. These matches could prove decisive in England's quest to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
