Senne Lammens Hails Tom Heaton's Key Role in Manchester United Adaptation
Manchester United's summer signing, goalkeeper Senne Lammens, has openly praised veteran team-mate Tom Heaton for playing a pivotal role in his swift adjustment to life at Old Trafford. In an interview on the Fozcast podcast with former goalkeeper Ben Foster, Lammens highlighted Heaton's mentorship as a crucial factor behind his impressive early performances.
A Seamless Transition to Premier League Football
Since his £18.2 million move from Royal Antwerp on transfer deadline day in September, Lammens has quickly established himself as United's first-choice goalkeeper. The 23-year-old Belgian has brought a notable calmness to the defence, stepping into the role previously held by Andre Onana, who was loaned to Trabzonspor after inconsistent displays.
Lammens has already kept five clean sheets in the Premier League, becoming a reliable presence between the posts during the team's revival under manager Michael Carrick. Despite being overshadowed by higher-profile signings like Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, and Matheus Cunha, Lammens has proven to be an inspired acquisition.
Heaton's Invaluable Mentorship and Guidance
Tom Heaton, the 39-year-old third-choice goalkeeper who re-joined United in 2021 after coming through the club's academy, has taken on a mentor role in the dressing room. Lammens emphasised how Heaton's experience and personality have been invaluable.
"He's been really helpful," Lammens told Foster. "He helped me a lot the first couple of weeks especially to get me eased in. It's always nice to have someone who knows so much about the Premier League and this club and everything in between, to help me out when I need to but also to help me to relax and joke around sometimes. Coming from him, it's a good feeling."
A Growing Friendship and Mutual Understanding
Lammens further explained that his friendship with Heaton has flourished due to their similar personalities and approaches. He noted that Heaton's insights help him navigate both challenging and successful moments on the pitch.
"Probably why our friendship has grown so much is because we're a bit similar as well in every aspect - I can see a lot of myself in him," Lammens said. "And it's the same the other way around, he tells me a lot: 'you're so much like me when I was younger'. He knows what I'm thinking in every situation almost, so that's also where he helps me, maybe in more difficult situations, or when I'm doing really well, in those situations, trying to help me not get too outside of my head."
Recognition of Heaton's Enduring Quality and Character
Despite Heaton's advancing age, Lammens expressed admiration for his continued dedication in training, suggesting his prime years were formidable. He also highlighted the high regard in which Heaton is held by team-mates for his off-pitch qualities.
"Still today, at almost 40 years old, I can still see him in training, so I can only imagine in his prime how good he was," Lammens remarked. "For a Belgian guy, he didn't really have the recognition probably in the world. Especially, the most important thing, every team-mate you speak to about - or even his team-mates now in training - the way they talk about him, his qualities on the pitch, but even more so his qualities off the pitch, as the guy he is."
Lammens is part of a goalkeeping unit that also includes second-choice Altay Bayindir, but it is Heaton's influence that has stood out as a key element in his successful integration at Manchester United.
