Kyren Wilson, the reigning World Snooker Champion, has pulled out of two major pre-tournament events as his wife Sophie prepares for a significant surgical procedure. The 2024 Crucible winner will miss the John Virgo Memorial Service and the Champions' Dinner, both scheduled ahead of the World Championship.
The John Virgo Memorial Service, organised by 1997 champion Ken Doherty and Master of Ceremonies Rob Walker, will take place in Sheffield on Thursday to honour the late snooker legend who died in February. Wilson had planned to attend but said he must prioritise his wife's health.
Speaking about the situation, Wilson said: 'Sophie is actually in for some pretty big surgery on April 16, which I'm gutted about. Not only because it's my wife and I want to be there for her, but also I'd have loved to have gone down to the John Virgo service.' He added that the couple's focus is on family, noting that Sophie is frustrated she cannot enjoy the Champions Lounge at the Crucible.
Wilson has faced personal challenges this season, including a disappointing early exit from the UK Championship. After that loss, he admitted he was close to a 'mental breakdown'. However, following his Masters triumph in January, he emphasised the importance of perspective, saying: 'When something like this goes on, it puts life into perspective.'
The world number two plans to balance his World Championship campaign with family commitments, relying on support from his school to help with childcare while Sophie recovers. He expressed hope that a strong performance at the Crucible could lift his wife's spirits, calling a potential second world title 'one of my greatest ever achievements'.
