Kris Marshall, best known for his role as Nick Harper in the BBC sitcom My Family, has addressed his future on the popular crime drama Beyond Paradise and made a lighthearted plea to BBC bosses for a surfing episode. The actor, who plays Detective Humphrey Goodman in the cosy crime series, described the show as a "mad little show" and expressed his contentment with his current role.
Kris Marshall on Beyond Paradise Future
During an appearance on The Chris Evans Show on Virgin Radio on April 20, Marshall discussed his career plans. When asked about taking on other roles, he hinted that nothing else is currently in the pipeline aside from filming the next season of Beyond Paradise. "I'm really happy where I am at the moment. 'Coz, yeah...'coz I love the show, and I love the storylines. And it's quite a mad little show, and I love it," he said.
Potential Drama in Season Five
Chris Evans probed whether producers could "stir it up" in season five. Marshall revealed that he and his co-stars are about to begin shooting, teasing that "some stuff gonna spice it up," though he refrained from sharing specifics. When pressed for more details, he quipped, "Well, I mean, how long can a marriage last?"—a possible reference to the relationship between his character Humphrey and wife Martha Lloyd, played by Sally Bretton. The studio erupted in celebration, but Marshall quickly clarified, "I'm kidding, I'm kidding." Evans countered that he was "so not kidding," but the actor confirmed he would not give away spoilers.
Plea for a Surfing Episode
The conversation shifted to whether Marshall has ever tried to influence plotlines. He admitted, "I'm always like, 'Let's get us a surfing episode. We haven't had one of those yet.' 'Coz we're on the south coast, and surfing is mainly on the north coast." When asked if he brings his surfboard to use in his downtime, Marshall confirmed he does and owns three boards.
International Success and Fan Complaints
Beyond Paradise has become an international hit, attracting viewers from North America, Canada, and Australia. On the TV Reload podcast in 2025, host Benjamin Morris noted that Australian viewers had complained about delayed broadcasts. Marshall responded, "I've read a couple of those complaints myself. I think the last series, season three, ended about two or three weeks ago, so a few weeks behind the UK but not too much really and we will begin filming again soon."
Catch Beyond Paradise tonight (April 24) on BBC One, from 8pm to 9pm.
