Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate has publicly confirmed that he is on the verge of signing a new contract with the club, effectively putting an end to months of speculation surrounding his future at Anfield. The French international, whose current deal had been a subject of protracted negotiations, likened the situation to the contract sagas involving teammates Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah from the previous year.
Contract Talks Nearing Completion
In a recent statement, Konate expressed optimism about the ongoing discussions, indicating that an agreement is imminent. "There are many things people have said but for a long time we have spoken with the club and we are close to an agreement," he said. "I think everyone wished for that for as long as possible but we are in a good way."
The 26-year-old centre-back, who joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig in a £35 million transfer in 2021, emphasised his commitment to the club. "For sure there is a big chance I'm here next season. This is what I always wanted," Konate added, hinting at the final stages of the negotiation process.
Leadership and Personal Sacrifices
Beyond the contract talks, Konate opened up about his evolving role within the squad and the personal challenges he has faced this season. He described Liverpool as "such an amazing club and amazing family," underscoring his deep connection to the team and its supporters.
"I'm a leader already for this team, for the younger players, for everyone to be fair," Konate stated. "We know this is part of the football life. The legends are going to leave one day and after it's going to be our turn to take the lead."
The defender also touched on a difficult personal period, having lost his father earlier this year. "It was a tough year because many things happened and I think if everyone knew exactly what happened to me, they can understand which kind of sacrifice I've done for this club," he revealed, highlighting his dedication amidst adversity.
Szoboszlai's Contract Situation
Meanwhile, Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai has also addressed his own contract status, though his situation appears less advanced. The Hungarian international, whose current deal runs until 2028, expressed a desire to stay at Anfield long-term but noted limited progress in negotiations.
"As I said (a few weeks ago), there has been no real progression, so I cannot say anything new about my contract situation," Szoboszlai explained. "We have a lot of games to go and I am focusing on that."
Despite the uncertainty, Szoboszlai reaffirmed his affection for the club. "Of course I see myself here in the long term, but as I say, it is not really in my hands any more. I love being here, as I said many times; I love the fans and I really like to be here. My family is happy," he said.
Season Focus and Future Ambitions
Both players emphasised the importance of concluding the current season strongly, with Liverpool aiming to secure Champions League qualification. Konate, reflecting on a campaign of ups and downs, acknowledged the significance of this period in his career.
"Right now we focus on the end of the season and make sure we are qualified for the Champions League and after we take the time to talk about the season because it's going to be a big part of my story," he said, looking ahead to future reflections with his family and supporters.
Konate's impending contract extension marks a crucial piece of business for Liverpool, securing a defender regarded as one of the Premier League's best when at his peak. The club had identified retaining him as a priority, fending off interest from clubs like Real Madrid, who had monitored his situation over the past year.
