Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany has expressed his admiration for winger Luis Diaz, after former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard suggested the Colombian could make a sensational return to Anfield.
Diaz's Stellar Season at Bayern Munich
Luis Diaz joined Bayern Munich from Liverpool last summer in a transfer worth £65.5 million. The 29-year-old has enjoyed a spectacular debut campaign in the Bundesliga, scoring 23 goals and providing 18 assists across all competitions. His performances have been a key factor in Bayern's success this season.
Kompany's Glowing Assessment
Speaking after Bayern's midweek Champions League victory over Real Madrid, Kompany was effusive in his praise for Diaz. The former Manchester City defender highlighted the player's technical abilities and mental strength.
"Lucho brings a lot to the team. He can dribble, create chances, and finish. But what makes him special is his mentality; he's not afraid of chaos and becomes a threat in those situations," Kompany said.
He added: "He brings a lot of energy to the team. You can only congratulate the club on signing such a player. He's a great player for Bayern Munich."
Gerrard's Liverpool Recommendation
Kompany's comments come after Steven Gerrard, a Liverpool legend, suggested on TNT Sports that Diaz would be an ideal replacement for Mohamed Salah, who is set to leave Anfield this summer. Gerrard also mentioned Bayern teammate Michael Olise as another potential target.
"All day long," Gerrard replied when asked if he would like to see Olise at Liverpool. "But the problem is, why would he leave Bayern Munich? Big club, they're challenging for the big honours, probably the strongest Bayern Munich team we've seen for a while."
He continued: "He's about to take the World Cup by storm come the summer, he looks like a really happy kid, settled… I don't think he's going anywhere. But yes, I would love him at Liverpool, and you know what? I wouldn't mind Diaz back as well."
Contractual Situations and Liverpool's Summer Challenge
Both Luis Diaz and Michael Olise have contracts with Bayern Munich that run until 2029, making any potential transfers complex and expensive. Olise has also impressed this season, contributing 16 goals and 29 assists.
Liverpool face a significant rebuilding task this summer, with Mohamed Salah departing despite having a year left on his contract. Defender Andy Robertson is also set to leave upon the expiration of his deal.
The Reds will need to identify suitable replacements to maintain their competitive edge in the Premier League and European competitions.
