Klopp's Liverpool Return Comments Spark Controversy
Former Liverpool captain Phil Thompson has described Jurgen Klopp's recent comments about potentially returning to manage the club as "naughty" and unhelpful to current manager Arne Slot. The criticism comes after Klopp's appearance on The Diary of a CEO podcast where he discussed his future in football.
Klopp's Surprising Admission
Jurgen Klopp, who left Liverpool at the end of the 2023/24 season after a successful nine-year tenure that included Premier League and Champions League triumphs, made a surprising admission during his podcast appearance. The 58-year-old German, who returned to football in January 2025 as head of global soccer at Red Bull, acknowledged that a future return to Liverpool couldn't be completely ruled out.
"I said I will never coach a different team in England," Klopp explained. "So that means if [I return] it's Liverpool. So yeah, theoretically it's possible. I love what I do right now, I don't miss coaching. I don't. I mean I do coach, just different, not players."
The former Liverpool manager elaborated on his current feelings about day-to-day management duties, stating: "I don't miss standing in the rain two-and-a-half, three hours. I don't miss going to press conference three times a week, having 10-12 interviews a week. I don't miss that."
Thompson's Critical Response
Klopp's comments were later discussed by Phil Thompson and Sam Allardyce on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast, where Thompson expressed concern about the timing and public nature of Klopp's remarks. The former Liverpool captain questioned whether such comments were wise given the pressure on current manager Arne Slot.
"I thought that was naughty and that was a couple of weeks ago," Thompson said. "I thought him being asked the question like that didn't help Arne [Slot] who was then under a lot of pressure. His comments came three or four games into the [unbeaten] run and I thought 'why have you said that Jurgen'."
Thompson acknowledged that a Klopp return wasn't impossible, adding: "I'm not saying it won't happen and it's not right. It got a lot of traction and I was going 'no', we've been there and you hear that thing when you're in there."
Slot's Position Under Scrutiny
The controversy comes as Liverpool are currently on a 10-match unbeaten run in the Premier League, though a series of unconvincing performances during that period has kept pressure on manager Arne Slot. The situation has been further complicated by recent speculation linking former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso with a potential return to Anfield.
When questioned about the Alonso rumours, Slot offered a tongue-in-cheek response: "Yes he called me and said: 'What do you think about the team because I am going to take over in six months, can you tell me a little bit more?' Or maybe earlier. Maybe he takes over tomorrow!"
The Dutch coach, who led Liverpool to the Premier League title last season but has faced more challenges this campaign, added: "This is one of the weirdest questions I ever got. I am working here for a little bit more than one and a half years and I really like my work over here."
Klopp's Current Role and Future Possibilities
Since leaving Liverpool, Klopp has repeatedly stressed that he doesn't feel any longing for day-to-day coaching duties. His current position at Red Bull sees him working in a different capacity within football, though he hasn't completely closed the door on a potential return to management in the future.
"I'm 58, that's from your perspective, old from the other side, it's not that old," Klopp reflected. "That means I could make the decision in a few years. I don't know. If I had to make the decision today, I won't coach again but thank God I don't have to do that. I can just see what the future brings."
The discussion around Klopp's comments highlights the ongoing speculation about Liverpool's managerial situation and the challenges facing current boss Arne Slot as he navigates expectations at Anfield while dealing with constant rumours about potential successors.
