Jurgen Klopp has revealed that Harvey Elliott suffered a dislocated ankle during Liverpool's 3-0 victory over Leeds United at Elland Road, an injury that marred an otherwise dominant performance. The 18-year-old was stretchered off in the 58th minute after a challenge from Leeds defender Pascal Struijk, who was shown a red card by referee Craig Pawson.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, a visibly devastated Klopp said: "It is a bad injury. Ankle. I heard it was dislocated and we could put it back, he's now in hospital. He played an incredible game, an incredible player. Now he's out. Do I want such a young boy to have this experience so early in his career? No." The German added: "We will play without him but we will wait for him. He's a top top player."
Liverpool took the lead in the 20th minute when Mohamed Salah netted his 100th Premier League goal. Fabinho doubled the advantage from a goalmouth scramble before Sadio Mane sealed the points with a close-range finish after good work from Jordan Henderson and Thiago.
Virgil van Dijk also offered his support, saying: "First of foremost, all our thoughts and prayers are going to Harvey. Hopefully he recovers quickly and as good as well possible from it. Obviously we have no idea of the diagnosis at the moment but it did look bad. Apart from that it was a fantastic win here."
Elliott later posted on Instagram: "Thank you for the messages guys! Road to recovery starts now." Manchester United's Marcus Rashford tweeted: "Ahhhh man rivalry aside that looks really nasty, no one wants to see that, thoughts are with you Harvey."
Klopp praised his side after the win, which extended their unbeaten run to 14 games and lifted them to third in the table, level on goal difference with Chelsea and leaders Manchester United. The Reds had 30 shots in the match, taking their tally to 100 for the season, making them only the second team since 2003-04 to reach that mark in their first four league games.
