John Harbaugh has begun a major overhaul of the New York Giants, with longtime executive Kevin Abrams among the first casualties of the new regime. Abrams, who joined the Giants in 1999 and served as assistant general manager for over two decades, leaves after 27 seasons with the franchise. His departure is part of an 'organisational restructuring' under Harbaugh, who took over as head coach on Saturday.
According to reports, special teams coordinator Michael Ghobrial and most of the existing defensive staff have also been let go, including defensive line coach Andre Patterson, who joined in 2022 and battled prostate cancer this season. Some coaches were reportedly told to clear out their offices without meeting the new head coach. As of now, Harbaugh is the only coach listed on the Giants' website, with outside linebackers coach Charlie Bullen the only defensive assistant likely to remain.
Harbaugh, formerly of the Baltimore Ravens, aims to revive the Giants with young talents such as quarterback Jaxon Dart, running back Cam Skattebo, wide receiver Malik Nabers and linebacker Abdul Carter. The team has reached the postseason just once in the past nine seasons, cycling through seven head coaches in that period.
Abrams was a key figure in the Giants' front office during their two Super Bowl victories and was well respected across the league. His roles included vice president of football operations and salary cap analyst before becoming senior vice president of football operations and strategy.
