Kepa Arrizabalaga Impressed by 'Special' Arsenal Duo Max Dowman and Marli Salmon
Mikel Arteta started the highly-rated academy products in the FA Cup clash at Mansfield Town on Saturday, with goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga later applauding the "special kids" after their eye-catching performances.
Historic Debuts for Teenage Talents
Max Dowman, aged just 16 years and 66 days, became Arsenal's youngest ever player in the FA Cup during the fifth-round trip to a sold-out One Call Stadium. Making his first appearance since November following an ankle issue, Dowman impressed on a challenging afternoon in Mansfield.
Defender Marli Salmon's performance also belied his tender years, despite inadvertently helping Will Evans cancel out Noni Madueke's opener for the home side. The match was ultimately decided by super substitute Eberechi Eze, who secured a 2-1 victory and a place in the FA Cup quarter-finals for the Premier League leaders.
Goalkeeper's Glowing Praise
Arsenal's Spanish goalkeeper Kepa was effusive in his praise for the teenage duo after the match. "Wow – at 16, they play at the highest level," he said. "And how they play – they play so well. They're special kids who are used to training with us, they're used to being around us. They had the opportunity, I think they took it, and I'm so happy for them."
Arteta made nine changes for the Saturday lunchtime fixture, giving several academy products their chance to shine. Jaden Dixon also showed flashes of quality after the 18-year-old, signed from Stoke City at the end of the winter transfer window, made his debut off the bench.
Tougher Tests Ahead for Gunners
Arsenal had to dig deeper than they may have expected against their League Two opponents, but tougher tests lie ahead in their pursuit of multiple trophies. The Gunners face Champions League last-16 fixtures against Bayer Leverkusen either side of next Saturday's home Premier League clash against Everton.
March ends with the Carabao Cup final against Pep Guardiola's Manchester City as Arteta looks to win his first trophy since lifting the FA Cup in 2020. Kepa knows mentality will be key in these upcoming challenges, just as it was in Mansfield.
"The goal was to be in the next round, and we're ready," the Spain international said. "We now have the Champions League with a couple of big games, and we'll be focused. We knew these types of games and competition are always difficult. It was tricky today, we were focused and we knew what was going on. So, yeah, the most important thing is that we're through."
Mansfield's Proud Display
Mansfield Town did themselves proud on their first appearance at this stage of the FA Cup since 1975. Rhys Oates put in a man-of-the-match display against the club he grew up supporting, describing the experience as "a dream come true."
"I said as a child I just wanted to either play for Arsenal or play against Arsenal," Oates revealed. "I've managed to do that now. It took 31 years, but I've managed to do it and I've just made sure I enjoyed the whole day."
Despite the valiant effort from the lower-league side, Arsenal's quality and depth ultimately proved decisive, with the teenage talents Dowman and Salmon providing particular cause for optimism about the club's future.
