Ballon d'Or Pays Tribute to Diogo Jota as Widow Attends Ceremony

Diogo Jota's widow, Rute Cardoso, attended the Ballon d'Or ceremony in Paris on Monday night, where a special tribute was paid to the former Liverpool forward and his brother, Andre Silva. The pair died in a car accident in northern Spain on July 3, 2025.

During the ceremony at the Theatre du Chatelet, host Kate Scott addressed the audience, saying: 'This summer the football family was left in shock when we learned of the passing of Diogo Jota, who lost his life alongside his brother, Andre Silva.' Netherlands legend Ruud Gullit added: 'Jota was a fan favourite who gave everything for his club and his nation, and was loved by his teammates, and supporters. Together, let us remember them.'

A video montage highlighted the best moments of the two Portuguese players' careers, as well as on-field tributes paid in the months since their deaths. Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk and goalkeeper Alisson Becker were visibly emotional as they applauded, alongside Paris Saint-Germain's Joao Neves.
