Jordan Henderson has surgery on broken arm after World Cup injury

Jordan Henderson has undergone successful surgery on a broken left forearm sustained in a freak accident after England's World Cup last-16 victory over Mexico. The 36-year-old Brentford midfielder will miss the remainder of the tournament.

Injury Details and Surgery

Henderson suffered the injury after Sunday's 3-2 win over co-hosts Mexico at the Estadio Azteca. While celebrating with fans, he slipped attempting to jump back over an advertising hoarding and landed awkwardly on his left arm. Medical staff provided immediate treatment, including oxygen, before he was stretchered off and taken to hospital. It was quickly determined that surgery was required, ruling him out for the rest of the World Cup.

He remained in Mexico City with a member of England's medical team before traveling to Kansas City for the operation. On Instagram, Henderson wrote: "Surgery done! Let's get ready for the big one Saturday. Thank you to all the staff that looked after me at Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute. Especially the three surgeons who carried out the operation: Dr Kenneth P Unruh, Dr Mark J Winston and Dr Kirk McCullough."

Henderson's Role and Team Impact

Henderson had made only one appearance at the World Cup, as a late substitute in the 2-0 win over Panama in Group L. Despite being unavailable for selection, manager Thomas Tuchel values his experience and leadership, so Henderson will remain with the squad in North America ahead of Saturday's quarter-final against Norway in Miami.

England cannot replace Henderson under FIFA rules, which allow outfield player replacements only up to 24 hours before a team's opening match. The Three Lions already used that provision when Trevoh Chalobah replaced Tino Livramento. Only goalkeepers can be replaced during the tournament due to injury or illness.

Henderson's Reaction

Reflecting on the win, Henderson posted on Instagram: "A night to remember that's for sure! What an incredible performance against all the different challenges. So proud to be a part of this special team. Thanks for all the support, another big one Saturday."
