Joe Hart Rejects Roy Keane's Punditry Style After 'Cocky' Jibes
Joe Hart responds to Roy Keane's 'cocky' criticism

Former England goalkeeper Joe Hart has drawn a clear line between his new career in punditry and the abrasive style of football analyst Roy Keane. This comes after the Manchester United legend once publicly labelled Hart as "cocky" and "arrogant" during his playing days.

A New Approach to Punditry

Hart, who retired from a decorated career one year ago, is now a regular fixture on shows like Match of the Day. However, he is determined to forge his own path in the media, focusing squarely on factual analysis rather than personal attacks. The ex-Manchester City star reflected on Keane's comments during an appearance on the In The Mixer podcast, brought to you by Sky Bet.

"That was probably the first bit of negative press I got," Hart revealed. "I'd been very much riding a wave." He described Keane as someone who "just says stuff," adding that he has since worked with him once to understand his character. Hart concluded that Keane likely doesn't even recall the incident, stating, "He don't care."

Taking Responsibility with Words

In stark contrast, Hart emphasised the weight he places on his new role. "I take huge responsibility in my new role," he stated. "Huge responsibility. I know the impact of my words." He highlighted the power of social media in amplifying criticism and the needless attention it can bring to players who are simply going about their business.

Hart found an ally in fellow podcast guest and former Manchester City teammate, Joleon Lescott. Lescott argued that pundits should stick to analysing on-pitch performances rather than delving into personal judgements about a player's character.

Hart agreed with the sentiment but also adopted a live-and-let-live philosophy. "You do you,'" he said. "If that's how you want it, that's what you think and that's what's going to work for you. Like, I can't tell anyone how to behave."

Defining the Pundit's Role

The retired goalkeeper admitted he sometimes questions the exact parameters of his new job. He recalled instances early in his media career where he refused to answer questions that he felt overstepped the mark, particularly those concerning a manager's job security.

"I just go, 'Look, I'm not talking about pressure [mounting],'" Hart explained. "That's someone's job, that's someone family. I'm not gonna talk about it." He affirmed his willingness to discuss results and team performances, but firmly draws the line at heaping pressure on individuals concerning their employment or place in a team.

The original criticism from Roy Keane dates back to 2012 and 2013, when he suggested Hart had become "cocky" while on England duty and later called him "arrogant," arguing he deserved to be dropped from the team. Now, as both men are established figures in football media, their paths are likely to cross more frequently, offering a continued study in contrasting broadcasting styles.
