David Allan, a leading jockey with nearly 1,400 career wins, has been suspended for 42 days after breaching whip rules for the fourth time in six months. Nine days of the ban are deferred for a six-month period or 200 rides, whichever comes first.
The 43-year-old, stable jockey for Tim Easterby, was referred to the British Horseracing Authority's disciplinary panel under the 'totting up' procedure. Panel chair Rachel Spearing KC described Allan as a 'repeat offender', noting this was his third referral since new whip rules came into force in March 2023. He also faced sanctions in November 2023 and 2024.
Spearing expressed concern that the most recent referral, which incurred a 32-day suspension, was imposed just 11 months ago. She highlighted a swift totting up after June 2025, with two breaches within a two-week period. The BHA recommended retraining, with two days of the ban to be spent receiving specialist coaching.
Allan, enjoying his best season with 80 victories and over £1 million in prize money, must now serve the 33-day active suspension. If he reoffends within the deferred period, the nine additional days will be implemented. Spearing warned that any further breaches will require 'extremely close scrutiny' by the disciplinary process.
